Example EC & Nutrient Balance Calculation

This example demonstrates how the EC & Nutrient Balance calculator estimates nutrient corrections for a standard solution based on target EC, nutrient distribution, and measured values.

Example input data

  • Target EC: 2 mS/cm
  • PPM scale: 500
  • Reservoir volume: 50 L
  • Nutrient distribution N:P:K | Ca:Mg 70% | 30%
  • N:P:K ratio: 3:1:2
  • Ca:Mg ratio: 3:1
  • Measured EC: 1.8 mS/cm
  • Measured volume: 45 L

Calculation result

The table below shows required water addition and nutrient corrections for the full reservoir volume.

Correction Plan — Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Water correction: add 5.00 L of water to reach the final target reservoir volume. This ensures the solution is diluted correctly before adding nutrients.
  2. EC after mixing: 1.62 mS/cm. This is the estimated electrical conductivity after water correction, before any nutrients are added.
  3. Adjust Nutrients: The table below shows the current nutrient levels after water correction, the deficit for each nutrient, and the amount to add to reach the target nutrient concentrations for the final reservoir volume. This ensures the solution matches the desired EC and nutrient balance.

• Current (ppm) — estimated nutrient concentration after water correction

• Deficit (ppm) — difference between target and current concentration

• Add — total amount of each nutrient to reach the target concentration in the final reservoir (50 L)

Note: This example illustrates how the calculator estimates nutrient corrections. Actual solution composition may vary depending on measured EC and volume. Always verify nutrient levels in practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

EC (Electrical Conductivity) shows the total concentration of dissolved salts in a nutrient solution. In hydroponics, EC is used to estimate overall nutrient strength. Keeping EC within the correct range helps plants absorb nutrients efficiently without stress or toxicity.
